Aspartame
Sweetener
What it is
An intense sweetener about 200 times sweeter than sugar, used in diet drinks and sugar-free products.
What it does
Sweetener
Gives a sweet taste, usually with little or no energy.
Regulatory position
European Union
Authorised for use in food
A food containing aspartame must carry the statement “contains a source of phenylalanine”, because people with phenylketonuria must control their intake of it (Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, Annex III).
Authorisation in one country says nothing about another, and the absence of a record here is not evidence either way. Where precision matters, follow the citation to the regulation itself.
